Big victory for carers tonight. HC-One (one of Britain’s biggest care companies) has confirmed to workers they will cover full sick pay (rather than SSP) for any carer with a positive test (should apply retrospectively too). @GMB_union
You might think it astonishing sick pay for Covid positive carers wasn’t guaranteed anyway but most carers don’t get it. Would be unthinkable for doctors and nurses in NHS.
As I’ve been reporting for weeks, the lack of sick pay is leading to greater risk of transmission, as carers who can’t afford to be off are afraid to get tests.
Big companies can afford to provide full sick pay (after dragging heels) but given wider financial pressures (now existential for many) they’re unlikely to follow suit. If govt wants to protect carers and cared for, easiest thing they could do is pay the gap.
It’s what carers want- they’re looking at furlough scheme and its exorbitant cost and asking, why can’t they have a tiny slice of the same, for just a few weeks while they recuperate?
