Hey, I missed that Jepsen revisited @MongoDB!

My takeaway is “MongoDB is well suited to your production data. Not *MY* production data; that’s super important! But it’s fine for your production data.”

I think @MongoDB is right when they say @awscloud’s DocumentDB is a poor copy of Mongo; the normally incredibly smart AWS database engineers can’t seem to figure out how to make the underlying storage subsystem lose data randomly.
If you wonder why I’m hitting @MongoDB so hard, it’s because they buried caveats about data durability for years, then blamed developers who lost data as a result of believing their outlandish claims.

You don’t get to gaslight your users and walk away with goodwill.
…which they apparently aren’t attempting to do. “You’re an idiot if you get it wrong” is certainly one hell of a DevRel take.

Today we explore a "gotcha" interview question from my past:

You accidentally run `chmod -x $(which chmod)`. How do you fix it?
You'll thrash around trying different things, all of which have some arbitrary reason they won't work.

"I'll copy it from another machine." "There are no other machines."

"I'll set the execute bit from python or perl." "There are no interpreters on your machine."
The "correct" answer is to cat the contents of $(which chmod) to another binary you're not using, then execute that.

`cat /bin/chmod > /bin/ping6; mv /bin/ping6 /bin chmod` will sort you out.

The problem is it's trivia, and not really discoverable in an interview scenario.

I'm going to break from my long-established pattern in this thread and talk about my past life: running large scale email systems.
I used to know postfix backwards, forwards, and inside out. It was my first real area of deep expertise. I can still quote chapter and verse from the SMTP RFCs.

These days I instead focus on cloud computing, specifically AWS. I scream at people to stay away from SES.
The right move for @ossia is to stay with SES.

If he's gotten it working and deliverability is high, he will not see ROI from absolutely anything else he does.
