A great memo from Madeleine Albright (@madeleine) to @BillClinton et al about her visit to Eastern & Central European countries (January 1994). Highlights the importance of the Eastern European factor for NATO enlargement, as @jteurope noted yesterday. 
Albright argues that you can't find another part of the world that is so "unabashedly pro-American". But they are frustrated that instead of being accepted to the West, they are still stuck in the "waiting room."
She mentions that the East Europeans fear another Yalta / Munich. Speaking of painful historical analogies.
Then we have this friendly statement. I don't blame them; unlike the Clinton administration, the Eastern Europeans did not suffer from a doublethink on NATO enlargement. But, yeah, it did raise the embarrassing question of what would happen if Russia qualified first.
Luckily for NATO and the East Europeans, this never happened. Imagine the chaos from having a Russian bear on the loose in Brussels. What, the 'Russian bear' is pejorative term? Look, I am just quoting Lech Walesa.
