In 962, Alp-Tegin, a Turkish Ghulam or slave soldier, who rose to be the commander of the army in Khorasan in the service of the Samanids, rebelled against the Samanid rule, seized Zabulistan and Ghazna south of the Hindu Kush in modern-day Afghanistan and set himself up as a
semi-independent ruler there. After his death, he was succeeded by his son Abu Ishaq Ibrahim. Abu Ishaq died soon after in 977 and Sabuktigin, his brother-in-law succeeded him to the governorship of Ghazna.
In 977 Sabuktigin marched against Toghan, who had opposed his succession. Toghan fled to Bost, so Sebuktigin marched upon it and captured Kandahar and its surrounding area. This prompted the Shahi King Jayapala to launch an attack on Ghazna.
The Shahi Ruler Jaypala was in friendly relations with Jammu and he asked for help to Raja Bhoj Dev, the ruler of Jammu for this attack. After receiving his message Raja Bhoj Dev arranged the required resources and reached to Jaypala's place with his Dogra warriors.
A grand battle took place in which Sebuktigin was soundly victorious. The battle was fought at Laghman (near Kabul) and Jayapala was forced to pay a large tribute. Raja Bhoj Dev of Jammu died in battle while fighting. After the death of Raja Bhoj Dev,
his son Raja Avtar Dev became the ruler of Jammu. On the other hand, after becoming sick during one of his campaigns, Sabuktigin died in August 997 while travelling from Balkh to Ghazni in Afghanistan.
Upon his death, his son Mahmud ascended the throne, albeit after a brief war of succession with his brother Ismail.
In the year 1001, soon after Mahmud came to power and was occupied with the Qarakhanids north of the Hindu Kush. In order to resist the further expedition of Mahmud, Jammu again sided with Jayapala.
This time Raja Avtaar Dev of Jammu sent his army under the command of Pahlad Dev to join the battle, famously known as Battle of Peshawar which was fought on 27 November, 1001. Jayapala was defeated and captured, whereas Pahlad Dev died while fighting.
As a result of the humiliation of the defeat, Jaypala later immolated himself in a funeral pyre. This is the first of many major battles in the expansion of the Ghaznavid Empire into the Indian subcontinent by Mahmud of Ghazni.
After this battle, Anandapala, the son of Raja Jaypal fled to Jammu and took refuge there. After few years, on the continuation of his raids Muhmad attacked Jammu and as a response to this invasion, Raja Avtaar Dev himself took the command alongwith his brother Kharak Dev and
gave tough resistance to Turk force.
The two armies having met on the outer limits of Jammu, Raja Avtar Dev looked upon the forces of Muhmad from a elevated hill which appeared in extent like the boundless ocean. On the footsteps of his ancestors,
Raja Avtar Dev considered himself as a wild wolf about to attack a flock of sheep: calling, therefore, his Dogra chiefs together, he encouraged them to glory, and issued to each his commands.
His Dogra soldiers, though few in number took aggressive action against the Ghazni troops with their blood thirsty flight and cut down their heads in frenzied manner. They divided themselves in the numerous groups of few men, which were directed to attack successively,
one particular point of the Turkish line, so that it might continually have to encounter fresh troops.
After the tough battle Mahmud was made to retreat back and he fled away from the battle field leaving behind camels, horses, elaphants and other war material.
Raja Avtar Dev defeated him ruthlessly and protected his country from raids of Ghazna. Mahmud wanted to take revenge of this defeat but changed his mind due to inhumanely character of Dogras in the battlefield and inhostile mountain terrain, so,
he never tried to attack Jammu again. This was one of major resistance of Dogras against foreign invaders to protect their country. They fought independently, even helped Shahi Ruler Jaypala to protect his country. When it came to their land,
they crushed their enemies with harshness.
But a question arises, how many of you know about such actions of Dogras that made the Turks to bend down in front of their Valor? I think, No one.
Hey! My Mighty Dogras it's a call from the son of Durgara, it's the time to rise again as our ancestors once did. We have repeat the history and prove our blood that it's the same blood which flowed in the veins of our forefathers.
The grand battle is knocking the Door, be ready to shed your Holy Blood.
