One of many stories I could tell is from graduate school. My comps reading group was to meet at Tuesday the next semester. Over summer I got some kind of job and asked the group if we could move to Wednesday w/a “no biggie if not!”
A day later I get an email, CC’d to me by the professor leading the reading group. It was a reply to the white woman who had come to him crying that I was forcing the group change and she was “so afraid” and “terrified” to tell me she preferred Tuesday.
She was so terrified that when I got the email? She was sitting next to me at the bar at my birthday party.
His CC remains one of the best boss moves done for me in this professional life. Let me know a snake was a snake, that he had copped her dog whistle and that I now knew.
I cannot count the number of times I’ve heard THAT voice, the one in that video, used to sanction, police and condemn me for shit as minor as chewing gum. We got nothing for this kind of violence.
At least I can try to stand my ground against white dudes who lynch us. We got absolutely nothing for white women’s violence. Literally, all you can do is remove yourself and start over.
