Adventures in gardening - May 25.
So, I went and got 8' long 2x2s and twine because I ran out of stakes and twine to mark my rows. Waited a long time at Home Depot, but eventually made it home with my stuff. 1/11
Learned (again) how to operate the cut off saw and cut some 2' stakes (at an angle so they would have a point to go into the ground). Got busy finishing staking the rows. 2/11
Well, the garden is EXTREMELY wet still, after all the rain. It was going ok, but the further north (and downhill) I went, the gooier the mud got. Second to last stake, my boots became thoroughly stuck. I was pounding the stake in and didn't notice at first. 3/11
But when I straightened up and tried to move onto the next stake, I could not move my feet. There was wobbling and swaying, and a desperate attempt to remain upright. But I had the momentum of thinking I was going to move and beginning that process with my whole body... 4/11
So, down on my butt in the mud was I. And I could not get up. Because my boots were ankle deep in mud. I couldn't roll over and use my hands. I was flailing around like an upside down turtle. With its feet stuck. 5/11
Finally, somehow, I summoned all my core strength and hurled myself up into a crouch. Then stood. Then began to try to remove my boots from the mud. 6/11
Weirdly, I was seized with the urgent idea that I did not wish to remove my feet from the boots, because then my socks would be all wet and muddy. It took some doing, but eventually, my boots came loose with rather awful plopping sounds. 7/11
I was about ready to call it a day. I did a few more things. I put away the cutoff saw for the night. Puttered around my newly planted trees and such. Checked on my seedlings. But, honestly, I was done. 8/11
I am a wimp. I know. My "wimp bar" is set pretty high. My whole adult life has been filled with the stories of my husband's farming cousins. Get kicked by a cow or rammed by a bull? Keep on working. 9/11
Roll the truck or fall off a shed roof... keep working... Fall off a freakin' silo and keep working as long as no bones are poking out...So, yeah, by that measure I am a total wimp. 10/11
I have showered off the mud (it was practically up to my elbows on my arms), and now the laundry is running. Tomorrow is a new day. 11/11
