OK, KIDS. Gather around.

One of my PhD students, the one who is closest to finishing her doctoral dissertation, is assembling her 3 papers-style dissertation. As such, she is writing her introductory chapter.

I realized I have no resource on my blog on how to write...
... the introductory chapter of the doctoral dissertation.

So here it goes.

My blog post on the Global Dissertation Narrative (GDN) offers a stepping stone to help doctoral candidates think through what their entire dissertation accomplishes.

IN THEORY, candidates should have already thought about many of these elements.
Once they advance to candidacy, they HAVE thought about these issues (see my post on what students should know before advancing to candidacy and/or defending their proposal raulpacheco.org/2018/06/develo…)

I also wrote a blog post on how to prepare a sort-of checklist for the thesis.
This blog post (the one shown below) raulpacheco.org/2018/01/prepar… offers a list of elements that I think every about-to-defend PhD candidate should have absolute mastery on.

Different supervisors may suggest contrasting elements or tables of contents for the dissertation.
The way I would encourage my students to write their introductory chapters is very similar to the one I suggest

Little known fact: epidemiology in many ways is very Bayesian: you learn new information and change your views on different things. Even lesser known fact: the policy sciences, those that study public policy making, are ALSO Bayesian: you adapt to uncertainty in decision-making.
Did (some/many/several) epidemiologists change their views on masks? Most certainly. As more information comes through, more trials and research is done, The same happens when do you adaptive and agile policy making: you readjust your policies and interventions to the new..
... information you get.

(I'm not talking about Bayesian methods in epidemiology, which is an entire different field and area of study, but more on using Bayesian thinking as a metaphor for adaptive approaches to developing new interventions as we learn more information).

Microthread on a typology of work I'm trying to clarify in my own head. This applies obviously to life before, during and AFTER the COVID-19 pandemic.

I think sometimes, in our institutionally-induced anxiety to "produce more, more, more" we devalue other kinds of work we do.
In another thread, I distinguished 3 types of work:

- "runway" work (hat tips to Dr. @meredithdclark who coined this "runway work" term) - this is work we need to get done even before we start "producing" (creating slides requires runway work that involves researching/reading)
- "grunt work" - this is work that does not "appear" like it leads to getting the "most valued" work, "writing/teaching/researching", but that we need to do. Transcribing interviews and field notes (though this could be considered "runway" work). Cleaning Mendeley/Zotero fields.

Voy a hacer un hilo aunque tengo que terminar mil cosas porque ésta conversación la tengo regularmente con mis estudiantes.

¿En qué consiste una tesis de licenciatura, una de maestría, una de doctorado?

Habiendo supervisado tesis de los tres tipos, aquí va mi opinión.
Como explica mi blog post, para mí éstas son las diferencias entre las tesis de licenciatura, maestría y doctorado:

1) Licenciatura - una aplicación interesante de un método, un nuevo conjunto de datos, una discusión teórica de un tema poco explorado.

Innovación: deseable.
2) Maestría - una contribución teórica o empírica (mayormente incremental), nueva aplicación de una vieja teoría, comparación de dos casos con teoría ya bien establecida.

Innovación: requisito, pero no "absoluta originalidad"

3) Doctorado - una contribución ORIGINAL.
