"Currently, government sources assess there are close to 10,000 soldiers of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on Indian territory. Dialogue is frozen, with the Chinese rebuffing Indian calls for flag meetings to resolve the situation"
"The most worrying situation is in the Galwan valley, where the PLA has crossed China’s own claim line (which Beijing had stated was the border with India), and breached 3-4km into Indian territory. PLA troops are digging defences ..." ajaishukla.blogspot.com/2020/05/after-…
"The Indian army has been slow to react. Indian troops have deployed in the vicinity of the ... incursions, but there are no attempts to outflank Chinese positions ... one-to-two Indian brigades have begun moving into the area over the last 2-3 days" ajaishukla.blogspot.com/2020/05/after-…
If this is correct, and the status quo involves Chinese positions as far as 3km west of the Chinese claim-line, the question I have is whether India will be content to reinforce defences and sit tight.
"they have reportedly come in large numbers into a new area (Galwan river valley) which had not been contentious ... they are staying put, dug down and in tents and not just as a short-term patrol ... these incursions are happening in multiple locations"

"The Chinese stranglehold over the [Galwan] valley has been strengthened over the past few weeks with over 5,000 PLA troops in position along the LAC, several of them patently inside Indian territory ... deployment is even larger on its side of the border" m.economictimes.com/news/defence/t…
"According to one version, China now has three times the troop levels in the area as compared to India, though sources say the ratio is still favourable to the defensive force. Heavy vehicles and even suspected mobile artillery are visible near the border" m.economictimes.com/news/defence/t…
"the Chinese side has brought in forces that were deployed at a nearby exercise to contest the strategic Galwan valley ... the massive build up suggests that the intention is to permanently occupy the valley." m.economictimes.com/news/defence/t…
A lower estimate of Chinese forces here. "There are an estimated 1,200-1,500 PLA soldiers now directly engaged in the almost eyeball-to-eyeball face offs [with India] at 4-5 locations on the northern bank of Pangong [lake], Demchok and the Galwan Valley" m.timesofindia.com/india/indo-chi…
'“The PLA has also moved some of its border defence regiments closer to the LAC, with at least 5,000 soldiers being diverted towards the border from an exercise being held in the region,” said sources on Monday.' m.timesofindia.com/india/indo-chi…
Indian and Chinese troops 500m apart at Galwan. "The PLA has pitched 80 to 100 tents as well as brought in several heavy vehicles and earth-moving equipment ... Indian positions in the area, around 500 meters away, have also been suitably reinforced" m.timesofindia.com/india/indo-chi…
'A concern for the Indian military [is] Chinese troops around several key points including Indian Post KM120 along the Darbuk-Shayok-Daulat Beg Oldie road in Galwan Valley. "It is serious. It is not a normal kind of transgression" [said ret Gen DS Hooda]' ndtv.com/india-news/ind…
The Global Times view. "India has been clearly and definitely aware that the Galwan Valley region is Chinese territory. But according to media reports, since early May, India has been crossing the boundary line ... and entering Chinese territory." globaltimes.cn/content/118947…
.@PStobdan: "at Pangong Tso, [Indian and Chinese] forces had physical scuffles ... at Sirijap on May 5-6 and May 11. The situation remains tense at Sirijap’s cliff spurs and also at the Tso, where troops are chasing each other in high-speed patrol boats." indianexpress.com/article/opinio…
"once China gets control of the southern side of the Karakoram it can easily approach Siachen Glacier from the Depsang corridor and meet at Tashkurgan junction from where the CPEC crosses into Gilgit-Baltistan. That would be disastrous for Indian defence" indianexpress.com/article/opinio…
.@Nrg8000 says that satellite imagery of Ladakh as of Friday does not show very high Chinese force levels
An older but nice Pentagon map of Pangong lake upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…
DS Hooda, a former Northern Command commander, says there is no space to deploy 5,000 troops long the LAC, and that they are probably in "depth areas" to the rear hindustantimes.com/india-news/chi… Guess the higher figures refer to this.
Harsil is around 300km south of Pangong lake
From north to south, on blue markers: Galwan, Pangong Tso and Harsil, roughly.
"At least six rounds of talks have been held [incl] at the division level in Ladakh...Chinese soldiers have transgressed by about 3km into Indian areas in at least four locations, besides a troop build-up on the northern sector along their side of the LAC" theprint.in/defence/india-…
"Sources said the road constructions that have riled up China, must continue. ... In the last one month, a rare situation has emerged where all three sectors of the India-China frontier have become active" indiatoday.in/india/story/in…
"Officials said while the military has taken position & done proactive preventive deployment in the west and central sectors of the LAC, and is prepared for a long stand-off, established channels for resolution of border issues are working round the clock" theprint.in/defence/india-…
Issue is not Shyok-DBO road, but offshoots? "the Chinese are peeved at a road construction work that India is carrying out from ‘Finger 2’ area of Pangong Lake, as well as a feeder road to the strategic Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi road constructed last year." theprint.in/defence/india-…
