Over 13,000 people were fined and not one minister stood up and said the fines were wrong at the daily briefings - we were told “this is not advice it is an instruction - stay at home save lives”
This is about one person being allowed to use his ‘judgement’ and for what he thought was best for his family’ while the rest of us were told it’s is hard, but you need to listen and follow our advice or more people will die”
And that is the reason Cummings should go, in order to restore public trust, to show that rules and instructions apply equally regardless of who your are or who you work for
Please don’t make Cummings the victim, don’t turn him into a figure of fun and never, never say you want him to stay in post because it is better for Labour and will damage the tories more in the long term - people have died and continue to die from this wretched, deadly virus
This isn’t about party politics or other political tribalism - it is about right and wrong, it is about accountability, it is about the government doing the right thing and being seen to do the right thing
Finally: and this is probably the bit in me that always annoys people: I still believe the vast majority of people want to do the right thing, the vast majority of people will do what is best for everyone - we will always try to do more good than harm BUT
We do need leadership, we need to know the government are with us, that we are all in this together
