Remember all those warnings that UK could be corralled into paying for the EU recovery plan.

The withdrawal agreement means the UK will not be asked to contribute to emergency recovery spending under current EU budget.
If transition extended, that is a separate negotiation.
EC estimates on what new EU taxes/levies could bring in (per year)

*extension of emissions trading system €10bn
*carbon border adjustment €5-14bn
*tax on large companies €10bn
*digital tax €1.3bn
*plastic tax €3-4bn -9bn

Germany’s EU ambassador Michael Clauß has said the UK “needs to have a more realistic approach” on Brexit. “No real progress” has been made so far he told @epc_eu. Hopes there will be a deal by second half October and it cannot be much later b/c EP ratification.
“Is a deal possible? Yes Definitely. But I think it also means the UK has to have a more realistic approach… You cannot have a full sovereignty and at the same time full access to the internal market.”
Amb Clauß sees German presidency (starts 1 July) falling into three phases

🚨 As Brexit round 4 starts on Tuesday, European parliament says EU has no legal duty to give UK trade privileges offered to others. theguardian.com/politics/2020/…
Document also states that EU is "sovereign" (now who said that first...) and has “the right to propose the commitments that are in its interest”.

No big surprises (and the EP isn't in the negotiating room) but shows how EU position is cementing ahead of talks.
EU expectations of "high-level conference" expected between Boris Johnson and Ursula Von der Leyen (not the EU27) are pretty low.

Once seen as crucial rendezvous, now just something we "need to find a common strategy to deal with” says one source.

Brexit talks risk “stalemate” if there is no progress in the next week's round of negotiations.

In the parallel non-corona universe there shd have been five rounds of EU-UK talks by mid May, but there have only been four and three of those by video link...
While the video-conference experience is getting better (for some) it’s definitely not ideal. “In the normal world you would take Mr Frost to the bar and explore possible solutions,” suggests one diplomat.
One EU source says talks are "constructive", UK has said "tetchy".
