Jam ‘the countryman’ Farrelly from Blackhills was coming home from Kingscourt late one night. He saw 2 girls sitting on the side of the ditch - he got afraid when he saw them - they wore shawls. He knew they were ghosts. #NFC1942
“A small little woman used to be seen at the crossroads at Tierworker, near Briody’s public house. Jam “the countryman” saw her as he was coming home from a wake”. #NFC1942
Joe Finnegan bought Briody’s pub. He went off to bed and he was just closing his eyes when the little haired woman appeared “Yikes” cried Joe. She flittered the blankets off the bed. He had to get his brother Peter to sleep with him after that. #NFC1942
Mickey ‘the Sthurk’ was the local land bailiff. Barney Gargan met him on the road one night “Howya Mickey” said Barney Mickey said nothing. It was only then that Barney remembered that Mickey was dead these five years. This was just outside Moybologue graveyard #NFC1942
One night the Pringles of Tierworker were sitting up watching a cow to calf. Old Ellen Pringle was in the kitchen. A black dog 5 times as big as a greyhound walked in. She chased him out with the sweeping brush. Obviously it was the devil. #NFC1942
Mickey Mitchell was coming home after selling pigs at Carrigmacross one night. He met the same big black dog “the size of 3 greyhounds”. The ‘dog’ walked behind until he got to Pringles house and then it sloped off into a field. Mickey got an awful fright. #NFC1942
Let’s hear what 85 yr old (in 1942) farmer Barney Gargan from Moybologue had to say about ghosts: “ghosts took all sorts of shapes - men and women and dogs. If you touched one you would think you were touching a pack of wool” #NFC1942
Ghosts used to be seen on the Copponagh Road near the Loughinlay. A fellow called ‘The Butler’ was seen there after he died. “That was 80 years ago (1860). “That ghost was killed in the finish by a fellow called Fitzpatrick” #NFC1942
Fitzpatrick had to go for the midwife and he met ‘The Butler’. The ghost wouldn’t let him pass. “Damn your soul, you won’t stop me” and he threw a box at him. The ghost fancied his chances and ‘made a box back at him’. #NFC1942
Fitzpatrick said after that he felt some substance when he hit the ghost but “it was like boxing a shadow”. He could see “the black paws” of the ghost hitting him but could feel nothing. In the end the ghost gave up and was never seen again #NFC1942
Everyone said afterwards that Fitzpatrick “killed the ghost”. “Everyone would tell you that that road at Copponagh was a terrible road for ghosts - a black dog, called the ‘Black Kesh’ was often seen there” #NFC1942
“A ghost does be white or pale in the face. I couldn’t say if they have any weight. I heard it said if you want to speak to a ghost you should say ‘In the name of God what is troubling you. There was something annoying them that caused them to be appearing” #NFC1942
“There are plenty of people that never say a ghost and never will. I often heard it said that anyone born in the daylight will never see a ghost but if you were born at night you would” #NFC1942
