Here’s an unusual ghost, one with strange behaviour , even by the fairly low standards set by other ghosts. She is from Tierworker in Meath and her name is Gargan, otherwise Garbhog or in English Garrawog #Ghost
It was a Sunday and Garrawog was going to mass at the old church at Moybologue. Her servant drove the horse and cart. She intended to receive holy communion so she was fasting - but she was starving #Ghost
The road from Tierworker to Moybologue was a narrow one and the briars formed an arch over the road. Garrawog was tempted by the lush blackberries hanging on the briars. “Grab a bunch of them berries” says she to her servant #Ghost
Her servant refused and it was at that moment that he realised that he had made a mistake. Garrawog grabbed a handful of berries and swallowed them. But she didn’t stop there. She also ate the briars and indeed swallowed her servant as well #Ghost
Briars and servant followed the berries downher throat and the poor old horse got quite a shock when she ate him as well. She even swallowed the cart. Word was sent to the priest (St Patrick?) #Ghost
The priest wasted no time in confronting the gluttonous Garrawog. “Story Garrawog?”. “Story yourself father” she replied. “Do you see this staff?” he asked. “What about it?” She replied *Whack!!* #Ghost
The priest gave Garrawog the most unmercifully clatter of the staff . “Youch!” says she as her body was chopped into 4 pieces. One quarter flew down the road and landed outside Mick Gargan’s house. One went into the sea and we don’t know what happened the rest #Ghost
After mass was over the congregation asked was it likely that Garrawog would rise again. “No way... well ...not until nine times nine generations of Gargans passed the spot on the road where a quarter of her landed””That’s ok so” they said #Ghosts
From that day to this every time a Gargan is going to Moybologue graveyard, they climb across the ditch and walk through the fields rather than pass the awful spot - because they have lost track of the number of generations that have passed #Ghost
I think we can agree that Garrawog is, thankfully, quite unlike any of the ghosts that we have met so far. It has been suggested that she represents the forces unleashed around the festival of Lugnasa- 1st August - an important date in the old agricultural year #Ghosts
An interesting addendum to the Garrawog story and the unlikely appearance of St Patrick as the hero who saved the day might be explained by the fact that the old church in Moybologue was called St. Patrick’s. So if it wasn’t the parish priest it was the patron himself #Ghost
