How in hell is it that the CDC's new best estimates of symptomatic case fatality rate are not the top story in America every day all day? Symptomatic case fatality rate at 0.4%. If you assume -- as CDC does -- that 35% of cases are asymptomatic, you're looking at CFR 0.26%.
What does that mean? Well, let's compare it to the never-to-be-named seasonal flu, by age. Again, all stats via CDC (chart via Business Insider).
Assuming 35% asymptomatic, we're looking at a CFR of .0325% for 0-49, 3.5x as deadly as the flu (largely in the 20-49 crowd); 0.13% for those 50-64, 2x as deadly as the flu; and 0.845% for 65+, about as deadly as the flu. If my math is wrong, correct me, and I'll correct it!
What does this mean? First, it means that the flu would be damnedly more deadly if it were easier to transmit. This thing transmits far more easily than the flu. Second, it means your odds of death from this thing are higher than the flu, but not by orders of magnitude.
