How to use yours the modern way: nytimes.com/wirecutter/rev…
• If dishes go in too clean, the soil sensor might cut the cycle short
• Scrape off anything solid, but you can leave some goop & crusty stuff
• Modern enzyme-based detergents excel at breaking down gunk (even a tiny amount can work through a dirty load)
• They don’t have enzymes, so they can’t break down food
• Powders, tablets, and gel packs do have enzymes, along with other helpful ingredients, making them much more effective
• Rinse aid will make any dishwasher work better, but it’s particularly important for condenser-dry dishwashers
• It'll help water slide off your dishes more easily
• It also prevents that hazy film from forming on your glassware
• Aim dirty surfaces down and in, toward the wash arms
• Avoid nesting silverware and bowls too closely
• When loading big dishes or pots, be mindful that they don’t block the water jets from reaching other nearby dishes
• Run it under the sink and lightly scrub with a soapy sponge
• It only takes a minute (and the filter doesn't get as gross as you might think)
• Note: If your dishwasher has a grinder, you don’t need to do this
• Run an empty load with a dishwasher-cleaning powder
• This dissolves soap scum, grease, and mineral deposits that build up with regular use
• If left unchecked for too long, it could cause odors and restrict water flow
• Most metro areas already do this, but those who get water from a well or anywhere w/ a mineral-rich water supply will need a workaround
• A whole-home softener is foolproof but $$$
• A souped-up rinse aid like Finish Jet-Dry Turbo might help
• Some dishwashers have a dedicated tray for special water-softening salts
• Failing all those options, most manufacturers suggest using extra detergent, and provide guidelines in the manual
