First up, the classic intro book is Van De Mieroop’s ‘A History of the Ancient Near East’. This is standard, solid overview that has been recently updated and includes the protohistorical period and balanced use of sources. (2/

For a different flavour, there’s Liverani’s ‘The Ancient Near East: History, Society and Economy’, which brings together many of Liverani’s influential ideas in the field. Original from 1988, but this is a revised 2014 English edition. (3/

Next we have (bit dated now) Kuhrt’s ‘The Ancient Near East 3000-330 BC’ from 1995... but hold on, there seems to be a new revised edition coming in 2021? And with Eva von Dassow’s additions?! This one may be one to look out for...(4/

A point of reflection, these volumes largely focus on history and draw mainly on historical (textual/visual) sources. Being an archaeologist, I cannot leave without pointing out this shortcoming! There’s a long debate on how to do ‘archaeology and texts’... (5/5)
