Here’s what I learned about architecture school and practice in my latest podcast with Zach (@cantradionalist): (0/6)

1. @wrathofgnon has likely turned more people in favour of traditional architecture with twitter than anything else today.

Except for, perhaps, the ugly buildings themselves.

2. The culture wars have reached architecture schools too. “Critical” architecture, just like Critical _________ Studies, seeks to subvert and revolutionize, not improve and support. (see @ConceptualJames for more)

3. Modernist architecture schools don’t consider traditional architects to be legitimate architects (!!!). This is why traditional architecture is excluded from the decision table.

4. In arch. schools, students learn only how to design convoluted utopian projects without care for budget. The more convoluted and confused, the higher the grade. There isn't much focus on normal buildings for normal folks. "Beauty" is a suspicious concept.

5. Developers tend to favour modernist design because a lack of ornamentation makes for cheap buildings. It's ironic, then, that the radical left profs, who teach modernism, end up supporting capitalism's drive for cheapness.

5. Those who wish to learn about traditional architecture may have to teach themselves. Fortunately, books and resources are straightforward. For eg.: Traditional Construction Patterns: Design and Detail - Rules of Thumb. amzn.to/2M7tevn.

6. Twitter pages are great sources of inspiration. Follow them!
