"A riot is the language of the unheard."

This MLK quote has circulated endlessly to justify riotous violence. But it misrepresents his stance.

From the same 1966 60 Minutes interview:

"I would hope that we can avoid riots... Riots are self-defeating and socially destructive."
Also from the same interview:

"I will never change in my basic idea that non-violence is the most potent weapon available... in [the] struggle for freedom and justice. To turn to violence would be both impractical and immoral."

(Edited to avoid archaic racial language.)
If you watch the interview (which I suggest), MLK talks extensively about the immoral and intolerable racism the black community faced (and which the community still faces).

But he never condoned violence. And he knew it wasn't a useful tool.

Peace is the most potent weapon.
I don't believe in violence, or aggression, or destruction. I just don't. And to see what's happening right now breaks my heart, because it simply isn't helping the fundamental cause of justice.

I don't care how many followers I lose; I'll keep proudly shouting out for peace.
You will always have a friend in me in the pursuit of justice, coexistence, love, civility, prosperity. I don't care who you are.

But if you're expecting anything else you should unfollow me. Follow misguided voices of violence instead. You're never gonna find that on this feed.
