Today I messaged my sister who lives in Chile for help. As many of you are probably aware riots broke out all over the country in protest of the government in October of 2019. Now as riots break out all over here I wanted to share some of the tips she gave me --
1/?
-- from the time she participated in these riots herself.

1) Many people lost an eye due to rubber bullets, so she recommends that if you go out, that you wear goggles if you can to protect your eyes.
2/?
2) If at any point you see that they are about to shoot something listen to how the sound of the gun echoes, and stay low. When they shoot rubber bullets they have a louder sound and a bigger echo. In their riots, shotguns that can shoot gas were used and those echo less.
3/?
3) Water mixed with baking soda and milk help to rinse out your eyes and help with the itching if they use pepper spray, please don't touch your eyes with your hands if you can help it.
4/?
4) If they have those big trucks that spray gas, wear layers even if it's hot! Her words: "Here they changed the chemicals and people were getting serious burns from it, even through their clothes."
5/?
5) A shield made out of anything is very helpful for those in the front line of the protests. Specially if they are shooting people with rubber bullets directly.
6/?
6) Eating lemons or drinking pure lemon juice helps with your throat if they are shooting gasses, drenching your mouth covering or cloth mask helps too, so it doesn't hurt your throat so bad.
7/?
7) If they are using the shotguns that shoot tear gas the pellets come out really hot and they hurt a lot, wear gloves. That way you can grab it before you can't see anymore and throw it back at them. Or kick the thing and get as far as you can.
8/?
8) If they are using tear gas, once you get home take off your clothes and take a cold shower, don't rub or scrub yourself down. Warm water opens your pores and rubbing/scrubbing pushes the chemicals into your skin.
9/?
I'm going to add a few things she told me here in addition:

"Just be careful for when they shoot things, the rubber bullets sound more like a gun, even if they shoot them at the ground they can still hit you, that's if they shoot them how they should be shooting them --
10/?
-- which is aiming them at the ground, but if they are doing it like they did here and actually shooting it at the protesters, then stay low, keep your head down and run for it. Hopefully they don't change the chemicals on the tear gas --11/?
-- or start shooting live ammo like they did here. Try not to get surrounded, here the Riot officers were out for blood, I don't know if the same will be happening there. Carry a first aid, you never know when it could be useful. They're not immune so try to get --
12/?
--the tear gas pellets back to them, it will affect them too. Stay safe out there."

It hurts my heart that my baby sister had to go through those experiences herself while fighting for her rights in our home country, but if any of these tips help any of those currently--
13/?
-- fighting for their rights out there, her sacrifice was worth it. I have a small platform, but please pass this information around, I don't know how much more these riots will escalate, please stay safe out there. My heart hurts for those whose voices have been silenced.
14/?
One life is one life too many, don't add to the ever growing list of African Americans, Latinos and other POC that have been betrayed by the justice system in this country and hurt by those that swore to protect us.
15/?
Remember their names.
Remember their faces.
Fight for the rights that they were so callously denied.
Help me spread these tips.

Added Tips #1: If Drones are coming out, lasers, just good old run of the mill that you can purchase at an office depot or anywhere, they can blind them and eventually brings them down, please try to not aim it at people's eyes as it could damage and hurt them.
Added Tips #2: The backpack you are using to carry your first aid, water, baking soda/water mix, Milk, or whatever else you are bringing with you needs to be one that will sit tightly on your back, it reduced the chances of you losing your balance and tripping when running.
