Thread: I attended an Zoom call (also live-streamed on FB) on Sunday, on invitation from BJP's Vinit Goenka, who has filed a case in the SC against Twitter.

Not only did Mr. Goenka call for twitter to be declared a terrorist organisation, but also for charges of sedition to be filed against the company’s public policy officials, and cases and complaints to be filed against them across the country medianama.com/2020/06/223-vi… (2/n)
On the call were various other complainants. One has filed complaints with commissioners of Police in Mumbai and Pune, as well as the NIA. Others in their local police stations. One said he is in the process of filing a case in Gujarat HC medianama.com/2020/06/223-vi… (3/n)
The issue is a promoted tweet that Twitter allowed, from a separatist organisation/handle which wanted a referendum on Khalistan in 2020. Those on the call repeatedly accused Twitter of taking "blood money" medianama.com/2020/06/223-vi… (4/n)
What was particularly interesting for me, was the strategy. Someone said that over 50 complaints/cases have already been filed. The person filing the case in Gujarat shared his strategy for filing court cases while asking everyone to file complaints. medianama.com/2020/06/223-vi… (5/n)
His strategy:
1. Filing a case brings local visibility for the issue, and brings it into "limelight" locally.
2. Psychological & financial pressure: It costs an activist nothing to file a case, Twitter Rs. 5-10 Lakh per case. 10-12 cases = 1-2 CR medianama.com/2020/06/223-vi… (6/n)
3. More diligence from authorities with more cases
4. If these matters get clubbed at the SC, more media awareness.

This is the first time I've seen this kind of a case-filing pressure tactic + strategy being discussed on a live-stream.

The other thing was the focus on bringing this issue into the limelight, so that the media reports it nationwide.

I was on @rahulkanwal's show on India Today yesterday, on privacy during COVID19 + Aarogya Setu app. Couldn't share all my points, but here goes:

1. The Privacy challenge we are all facing right now is balancing the health of many versus the privacy of a few.

2. These are unprecedented times, unprecedented measures are being taken. Surveillance happening right now: contact tracing,lists being published,drones being used to surveile,quarantined folks being asked to selfie themselves&Facial recognition being used on them by police.(2/n)
While some actions may be necessary right now + speed would have been given prominence over other factors, measures need to be taken to limit negative impact on individual privacy.
