This beautiful “Kaamaantaka Murti” – Burning Kaama/Manmatha to ashes” episode is made with in a panel of just 1 feet of GangaikondaCholapuram Temple.

Just Imagine how explanatory & creative our ancestors were in explaining the stories of our Gods in hardest stone Granite.

The explanation of the episode is as follows:
1)In Sculpture Shiva looks as Dakshina Murti because, here he is in to Yoga Nidra due to sadness caused by death of Dakshayani/Sati

Observe the grace sculpted in Shiva

During the same time Tarakasura creates Havoc.

All Devas send Kaama/Manmatha to bring him out of Yoga Nidra.
2)Manmatha is shooting arrows at Shiva with his Sugarcane bow & 5 arrows.

On disturbance, Shiva opens his third eye burning Kaama to ashes.

3)Manmatha lying on the ground after the anger of Shiva. Observe his dressing and jewellery in exact replica to actual Manmatha.
4)Rati Devi is praying Shiva to forgive Kaama for which Shiva agrees.

5)All Devas in Aakaasa in reverence of Shiva.

Did you know this, about our temples?

An entrance/doorway to a main temple is called “Bhadra”

(Not to mistake with Gopuram, which is entrance/doorway to the Praakaaram (compound) of the temple, Praakaaram is common in Dravida Temples but not in Nagara Temples)
If it is main entrance it is called – Mukha Bhadra.

If their entrances from two sides or three sides, they are called – Dwi Bhadra or Tri Bhadra.

If there are entrances from all four sides, then they are called – “Sarvotobhadra” temples.

Did you know this fact about our temples?

Based on presence of Pradakshina Path (P) around Garbha Griha our temples are of two kinds.

1.Sandhara – are temples with Pradakshina Path to go around Garbha Griha.

Sandhara means providing Aadhaara. With the presence of Pradakshina path an extra layer of external wall is created to to share the weight Shikhara & save Garbha Griha.

Eg. Vishwanatha Temple, Khajuraho
2.Nirandhara - are temples without Pradakshina Path to go around Garbha Griha.

Since there is no external wall to provide extra support to bear weight of Shikhara, the temples is Niradhaara – without Aadhaara.

Eg. Devi Jagadambha Temple, Khajuraho

Did we ever wonder what our Gopuram represents?

Gopuram is a formal entrance to the “Praakaaram” of the temple generally from the East.

There can also be Gopurams in 4 directions.

If so, the larger one, generally in the east is considered as the “Raja Gopuram”. Sometimes this differs.
It is scientifically tested & Proved that these gopurams take the “Seismic Load” protecting the temple from Earthquakes.

Earlier Gopurams were small in comparison to “Vimana” but later they grew robust & were visible from many Kilometres to the pilgrims & Devotees.
