the exodus of Chinese students from the US/Canada, and the resulting huge spike in demand for flights into China have made people book otherwise *ridiculous* itineraries.

the supply is currently limited by the throughput of gateway cities (PVG, TSN, SHE etc) to process international arrivals and availability of quarantine hotels: each 777 would take about 6hrs and half a terminal to process.

They are still super cautious with COVID19.
Now these ridiculous itineraries will be the only possible way to go to China in the foreseeable future.

1/ UMN hydroxychloroquine PEP trial came out this afternoon.

It is a well-designed study with a fatal flaw.

The conclusion I can draw is HCQ does not prevent *self-reported* COVID19 from developing if taken 1-4 day post exposure.

2/ It does NOT answer the question whether HCQ helps to expedite COVID19 recovery or reduce disease severity.

The authors have a parallel study that I hope can address this question soon with higher quality data.

a quick look at the problem in the NEJM paper today.
3/ The fatal flaw here is that the vast majority (80%) of COVID19 cases as the end point is self-reported by symptoms, not by rtPCR or antibody or CT scans.

Authors acknowledged this too. This practical limit is not their fault, but it does discount the value of the study.

1/ My wish list of short-term progress on COVID19.

1. low-cost & widely available 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 IgG tests
2. solid understanding of antibody response of infected K-12/college kids.
3. efficacy study on prophylactic and early (48hr from symptom onset) of antivirals
2/ If major progress can be made in these areas in 4-5 weeks, then re-opening can proceed in an informed/targeted way both at an individual level and at the national level.
3/ 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 IgG tests produce useful info:
a. who have immunity at a given point in time
b. regularly scheduled tests give us an idea of half-life of this immunity.

both are helpful on the timing of relaxing social distancing at individual and society levels
