As an Arab Spring activist let me acknowledge that my PTSD is triggered by scenes of men in full military gear deployed against nonviolent protesters in America as a tone deaf president issues threats and instrumentalizes religion. I'm really triggered.
I'm anguished over this, America, even as in my heart I feel you'll be okay. I can't say the same for my sisters and brothers in the dungeons and graveyards across the MENA from Morocco to Iran and from Syria to Sudan.
I know many of my sisters and brothers are also triggered. Reach out on DMs if you need to talk.

Sometimes in opposing the powerful we end up centering the powerful. It's a spectrum that runs from "reforming" or "educating" them all the way to "hating" or "destroying" them. This is a mistake. Your priority should be to center the underprivileged, not the privileged.
The system will spin on its head not when you set out to "reform it", but when those it's built to exclude acquire enough power and relevance to force it to either change or perish. Power does not give way except to power. If you're not building power you're getting nowhere.
To obsess about the powerful is to center the powerful. Do not put them in the center of the frame.

I want to tell you about a Black cellmate who I met when I was imprisoned in Al Sadr Prison in Abu Dhabi back in 2014.
The young man spoke in a Saudi accent and said he was Saudi. He said he and his friends crossed the border into the UAE by mistake while they were out on a desert drive. His friends were released back to Saudi Arabia, he was detained and taken to prison.
The officers did not believe that he was Saudi because he was black. I met him while standing in a long line to use the phone, which was a privilege in the packed prison. He said all he wanted was to reach his family so they can send over his Saudi passport so he can leave.

Israeli troops shot dead a 32-year-old autistic man in front of his caregiver. "He's disabled", she said. They still shot him dead. There will be no vigils, no protests, nobody will remember his name and nobody will be held accountable. He was, after all, Palestinian.
His name was Iyad. Iyad Hallaq. You remember George Floyd's name, remember this name too.
Yesterday I read an op-ed by someone who follows me, in which he wonders why so many people invest their energy into resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at all. He actually printed these words and they were published in a reputable platform. Sit with this idea today.
