Since @dw_culture is going to premiere some great drone flights over German World Heritage sites, here's my Top Ten for anyone thinking of coming. /1
10. Officially classified as 'Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura', these are a series of caves here in Baden-Württemberg that have thrown up amazing rock art and figurines, such as the famous 'lion man', now on display in Ulm. whc.unesco.org/en/list/1527
9. The 'Collegiate Church, Castle and Old Town of Quedlinburg' is one of the greatest existing medieval complexes in existence, with the church in particular showing the wealth and prestige of the area in the high middle ages.
whc.unesco.org/en/list/535
8. The 'Archaeological Border complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke' dates from the end of the first millennium, and shows in great detail the urban planning and societal structures of Danish life at the time - it's within the Bundesrepublik though! ;)
whc.unesco.org/en/list/1553
7. The 'Hanseatic City of Lübeck' comprises the old town of the former capital of the immensely powerful Hanseatic League. To this day, archaeologists are discovering incredible details of life in what was a 'global' city. whc.unesco.org/en/list/272
6. The 'Würzburg Residence with the Court Gardens and Residence Square' was the home of one of the most extravagant Prince-Bishops of the Holy Roman Empire, and it looks it. Despite being bombed, it has been painstakingly restored to its former glory. whc.unesco.org/en/list/169
5. 'Wartburg Castle' was where Martin Luther was hidden after being declared a heretic and outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor. It's here that he translated the Bible into German. It's become a very significant place in German history. whc.unesco.org/en/list/897
4. Ever felt bad about not finishing something? Don't - it took over 600 years to finish one of the world's most beautiful cathedrals, 'Cologne Cathedral'. The story of the 'Dom' is the story of the city, and is a must-see for anyone visiting. whc.unesco.org/en/list/292
3. 'Maulbronn Monastery Complex', very close to me, was one of the most significant monastic foundations in Europe, and is one of the most well-preserved now, with stunning buildings and art. Also lent its name to a cult Swabian snack. whc.unesco.org/en/list/546
2. The 'Town of Bamberg', that is to say, the Old Town, has been immaculately preserved despite war, plague and fire. Also, it has more breweries per capita then anywhere else. Very nearly my Number 1. whc.unesco.org/en/list/624
1. 'The 'Frontiers of the Roman Empire' are massive, literally pass through my backyard and have hundreds of sites to visit. They constitute the fortifications built by the Romans at the limit of their expansion. I love picking a fort and exploring it. whc.unesco.org/en/list/430
