I had the real privilege to share my thoughts w/ @ddiamond for this piece on the public health community endorsing recent protests. He gives voice to his critics below.

To me, he’s one of the few who are earnestly asking what changed when many were saying the opposite weeks ago.
It should go without saying, but these things matter. The sacrifices people made to abide by quarantine requirements weren’t immaterial.

Pretending that they were, beyond just being cold-hearted, sets a bad precedent for how we weigh suffering when making public policy.
And it’s hard for many who resisted the lockdown to hear that this time it’s “worth it.”

Because weeks ago it was all about sacrifice; the message was that nothing was worth it. Now, we’re only focused on the other side of that scale - the benefits of ditching the requirements.

What we should’ve had all along was a robust discussion about what needed to give to allow social distancing & what was a bridge too far.

We didn’t b/c most of the bridges didn’t touch those in power or were bridges occupied by people they disagreed with.

So now we’re stuck here. Everyone now understands that some things are too important.

Good. As well they should.

But we can’t go back to how things were. It was a splapdash and partisan way to address all this. And we need to be more thoughtful about how to move forward.
And it doesn’t help that some, like @GovWhitmer, are nakedly hypocritical on these points.

We can’t move forward without those who led the charge having a mea culpa moment. What they did was unjust, and their actions demonstrate that their opinions have since changed.
