Women who want to cycle:
Here are things you need to know. (A thread)

1. You are allowed to be there (in the space, in the sidewalk, in the road, in the saddle)
2. You can wear whatever the hell is comfortable for you. I vacillate between shorts and dresses
3. You can go as fast or as slow as you want, enjoy your ride.
4. Don’t assume that how you’re treated in bike shops is because you know very little. It’s probably because you’re female. I know a decent amount, and I’m still treated as a child or ignored when I’m with a man
5. There are shops out there that really do respect you. They are gems and you should hold tight to them. Looking at you, @BikeBikeYYC
6. You can bike as a parent, and there are many options for carting kids around via bike. Cargo bikes are an interesting option out of many
7. Don’t listen to the people that tell you that you’re “brave”. They probably wouldn’t say that to a man. Biking has little to do with bravery, and more to do with enjoyment and health, which you’re entitled to.
8. Helmet hair? No problem. Braids are your best friend! After riding, I take out my braids for a wavy bombshell kind of look and set it with travel hairspray
9. Do you feel your heart beating? Good. You’re alive and in control of your moment. Breathe in the air, see the beauty.
10. Your voice matters. Send requests to your local infrastructure authority for upgrades for the betterment and maintenance of the spaces you inhabit. If you’re in #YYC, contact @311calgary by using their app.
11. ENJOY YOUR BIKE RIDE YOU STRONG AND CAPABLE GODDESS
