Why does the environment matter in Kutch?
Historically, it was seen as a 'marginal', unproductive environment (including by British colonisers). But there is a long history of pastoralism in the area...

Including a special breed of camel - swimming (Kharai) camels, who swim out to small islands on the coast of Kutch and munch on the mangroves there
Some conservation groups blame the camels (and their herders) for destruction of the mangroves, but this is a controversial claim. Another factor is the rise of polluting industries in the area...
Meanwhile, pastoralists have to face other changes. Climate patterns are disrupted, and their access to grazing land and fodder is being limited . But they are also actively chasing new market opportunities for camel milk
By making alliances and with help of campaigners, researchers & others, they are seeking to transform their conditions in ways that work for them and the environments they depend on every day
