This week's #PhoonFriday is looking at some of the smaller @RoyalAirForce units dotted around Scotland that directly support our Quick Reaction Alert mission.

Did you know there are three Remote Radar Heads in Scotland?

📡 Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides
📡 Saxa Vord, in the Shetlands
📡 Buchan, on the Aberdeenshire coast

In simplistic terms, radars send energy into the skies.

If the energy hits an object in the air such as an aircraft, it 'bounces back'.

The positions of all objects in the air are then plotted automatically and fed back into an overall picture for the UK.

All radar feeds are fed into a 'Recognised Air Picture', monitored 24/7 by @RAFBoulmer, @RAFScampton, and @RAFHighWycombe.

It's how the @RoyalAirForce keeps an eye on what's in the skies!

One of the engineers at RRH Buchan is Cpl Allan Maxwell.

He ensures the radar is 'turning & burning'. Ultimately it could be Buchan that picks up an unidentified aircraft, resulting in #TeamLossie scrambling #QRA.

Out of work, Allan is a big part of his community. He volunteers his time work with @aircadets at 1295 Peterhead Sqn, inspiring the younger generations who could be filling his shoes in just a few years time!

All three of the Remote Radar Heads in Scotland are managed by the Engineering & Logistics Wing at @RAFBoulmer.
