This thread is absolutely, positively derelict. You wanna know why? I have spent the past few weeks raging at ppl on the right who played games w/ risks & stats to argue "tHe LoCKdOwNs r dEaDlieR tHaN ThE vIruS". I have fought them as they've juked & handwaved & tapdanced..
And I have said one thing repeatedly: give me some actual econ fatality estimates from the lockdowns to compare to the projected COVID so we can judge relative risk.
But what does @JeremyKonyndyk do in this thread? Instead of giving you a fatality estimate for police killings (~1K ppl shot by cops in 2019 BTW), he handwaves that as w/ the same "IT'S NOT ZERO" logic & lockdown truthers & declares it balanced vs risk of further COVID spread.
Well guess what, black people have been hit far harder by COVID deaths than white people. Far more black people have died of COVID-19 and will die of it this year alone than will die at the hands of police. The numbers aren't even close. theguardian.com/world/2020/may…
But he and other public health experts are willing to throw all that out the window, tho. All of the sudden, actual data about the likely risks to black lives from COVID vs. risk from the cops is just ignored, & it's ok for everyone to run out into the streets in crowds & yell.
This is not hard: right now, in the present moment, COVID is killing way more black people than the police, by an order of magnitude or more.

Again: there is a highly contagious respiratory virus out there that is killing black people at a rate of 3X vs. white ppl, & killing a couple decimal places more black ppl than police are.

And yet the same public health experts I've looked to for guidance & whom I've signal boosted for ~5 months are now pulling the same statistical shenanigans & the same "but muh nuances!" that the Stanford "lockdowns are deadlier" hustlers were doing just last week!
The spectacle of public health authorities defending both the lockdowns AND the protests because "science" is just a catastrophe on every level. I cannot get over it.

Sure, I get what is at the root of that 3X the deaths of whites number. But have you considered that sending black ppl out into the streets to die of COVID is about as sane response to that as, say, burning down a pharmacy is to black healthcare access?
