We need systemic reform to address police brutality. But the federal government does have the power to investigate police departments with a history of discriminatory policing—a power that former AG Jeff Sessions severely constrained. Here's how we change that:
I’m introducing legislation to reverse the Trump administration’s limits on the use of consent decrees, empower state AGs to pursue their own investigations into discriminatory policing, and triple funding for DOJ’s Civil Rights Division so they can pursue these cases.
There is no one-and-done solution to the systemic racism deeply embedded in our policing and our criminal justice system. But it’s clear that Donald Trump won’t hold police departments accountable—so Congress needs to step up now.
