The end of the American century. Just as Trumps trade policy threatens the US alliances, he decides to withdraw 1/3 of the US troops from Germany. American hegemony is drawing to a close even quicker than I feared. /1
We don’t know whether this move is due to the NATO target to move towards 2% defence spending by 2024 (it isn’t 2024) or because Merkel does not want to travel to a G7 during the pandemic /2
Little does it matter. The US move leaves a power gap. It will be filled - whether by China, Russia or European states. The US feels it no longer has the strength, the economy and the will to be the world’s superpower. /3
