There are a lot of people who still think in binary China engagement vs containment categories.

They should re-read Gerald Segal's 1996 article "East Asia and the 'Constrainment' of China" in International Security.

We need constrainment policies towards CCP-led China. ImageImage
The key paragraph in Gerald Segal's article is this one:

"Formulating a policy of 'constrainment' requires an assessment of whether China's neighbors and powers further afield are strong enough to resist China." /1
"I argue that they are, but that it also requires the will to do so. The evidence presented below suggests that most states lack the will to constrain China."

This was Segal's assessment in 1996. In 2020 will there finally be more countries willing to constrain CCP-led China?

On June 3rd German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas @HeikoMaas was interviewed on ARD, Germany's first public service broadcasting station. He was asked whether Germany should respond to the deteriorating political situation in Hong Kong with sanctions against China /1 Image
In this interview German Foreign Minister Maas @HeikoMaas suggested that Germany was too small to stand up to China as a new super power. Maas also called for a Europe-wide strategy, which he admitted would be difficult to achieve (10:56 onwards) /2

I broadly agree with Victoria's bleak assessment of the current situation in Hong Kong.

Where I would slightly diverge is that in my view “One Country, Two Systems” (1C2S) already ended at around end of August 2019 2/16
