On this #DDay, remember that Black troops played a crucial role in the invasion of Normandy and fueled the Allies’ advances in Europe all the way through VE Day. Since the end of WWII they have been written out of this history. Here’s a short thread of Black troops and #DDay 1/
About 1700 Black troops landed at Normandy on #DDAY June 6, 1944. Port Battalions, Quartermaster Companies & Engineer Dump Truck Companies prepared the landing zone and brought troops and supplies ashore, while facing heavy Nazi machine-gun fire 2/
Anti-aircraft Balloon Battalions raised low-altitude hydrogen-filled barrage balloons to defend Allied forces from Nazi planes. See @lindahervieux’s book “Forgotten” for more on the Black barrage balloon troops #DDAY 3/
Waverly B. Woodson Jr., a Balloon Battalion medic, performed heroically on #DDAY. He treated over 200 men over a 30 hour shift. Stars & Stripes called him one of the medics who “covered themselves in glory on D-Day.” history.com/news/d-day-her… 4/
While the first wave of Allied troops invaded Normandy on June 6, thousands more came ashore in the weeks after #DDay. Black troops were even more important in this phase, because they were the backbone of the Army’s service and supply troops. 5/
After #DDay, Black amphibian truck (DUKW) drivers brought troops and supplies ashore and inland, port battalions removed Nazi landmines from the beach, and gun crews provided aerial defense. 6/
After #DDay, Black troops cared for the American wounded and buried the dead 7/
After #DDay, Black troops even baked bread and delivered mail to feed the stomachs and morale of American forces 8/
As American combat forces pushed into German-occupied France after #DDay, they could only go as far as their supply lines could take them. Which means they could only go as far as Black supply troops could take them 9/
The #DDay contributions of Black troops were recognized at the time, but in the decades that followed the end of WWII, Black troops were largely written out of the history of #DDay in books and films like "Saving Private Ryan" 10/
The Allies would not have won WWII without Black troops. On this #DDay anniversary especially, it is important to recognize the service of Black troops who gave their lives in a segregated Army for a country that has never fully honored their patriotism or sacrifice 11/11 end
