Trans rights do NOT erase the concept of sex.

We are a museum literally focused on genitals & we are trans inclusive.

What's important is the DISTINCTION between sex & gender.

Sex = biology, genitals, chromosomes, hormones, etc

Gender = sociocultural aspects and identity

1/
You can receive discrimination based on sex and you can receive discrimination based on gender.

Sex discrimination: e.g. reproductive coercion. This can happen to anyone who has a uterus, no matter their gender expression or identity

2/
Gender discrimination: e.g. catcalling. No one checks the contents of your underwear before catcalling, usually it is feminine presenting people who are targeted

3/
Many types of discrimination are a combination of both sex and gender discrimination

E.g. the pay gap. This is a combination of many factors including taking time out to give birth (sex), women being passed over for promotion because of perceived incompetence (gender)

4/
You can also be discriminated because of people assuming your sex and gender when they are wrong - there have been many reports of butch lesbians being harassed in women's bathrooms because it was assumed they were trans women and had a penis.

5/
Understanding the diff between sex and gender is important. For example - it is very difficult to get a cervical smear as a trans man. Sometimes, when your sex is changed to male on your records, your GP stops sending you screening letters. If you do go in,

6/
trans men often face nurses/ doctors who don't understand why a man has come in for a smear and say awful things and turn them away.

Cervical screens are unpleasant already - speculums are uncomfortable & poorly designed, the whole process not designed with vulvas in mind

7/
Combine these two types of discrimination and everyone is being failed by the system

8/
(and before anyone says "well maybe trans men shouldn't have legally changed their sex, how about you shut up and respect people's right to bodily autonomy)

9/
Trans 👏 rights 👏 do 👏 not 👏 erase 👏sex 👏

10/10
Oh something to add: sex and gender are often used interchangeably in medical records when they shouldn't be (varies across the world). This is why when the records say sex not gender, it can lead to people being failed by the system, such as the example given above.
