Oh hi! It's your friendly Vagina Museum curator here @ItsSarahCreed with another Thursday fact fun thread *cue cheesy elevator music*.... with it being CLITMAS and all, we thought it might be a good time to bust some clitoris myths in time for the festive holiday!
@ItsSarahCreed One of the most common myths about the gynaecological anatomy is that the clitoris is tiny and therefore impossible to find
@ItsSarahCreed But actually, the part of the clitoris you see within the vulva (the glans clitoris) is just the tip of the iceberg and the whole clitoris is on average approximately 8cm in length
@ItsSarahCreed The clitoris is made up broadly of three distinct parts - the glans clitoris (the part that is usually referred to just as "the clitoris") the vestibular bulbs and the crus
@ItsSarahCreed The glans clitoris is the only external, visible part of the clitoris & can vary in size from individual to individual. It is located above the urethra, at the top of the vulva & has approximately 8x more nerve endings than the tip of the penis, making it incredibly sensitive
@ItsSarahCreed Above the glans is the clitoral hood, which is the point where the labia minora meet from each side of the vulva – the hood protects the glans clitoris from any unwanted friction.
@ItsSarahCreed The crura (or crus if singular) are often referred to as the arms of the clitoris, reaching down either side of the vestibular bulbs, which sit inside the crura and extend through and behind the labia minora.
@ItsSarahCreed Both the bulbs and crura contain erectile tissue that swell during arousal – the expansion of the clitoral tissue can also cause pressure to the anterior (external wall) of the vaginal canal and can increase the chances of pleasure from penetrative sex in certain individuals
@ItsSarahCreed The whole clitoris can range between 7-12cm person to person, much like any other part of the anatomy it is unique in shape & size to every individual. However, there is still so much to learn about it as an organ - the first peer-reviewed medical study didn't happen until 1998!
@ItsSarahCreed Urologist Helen O'Connell undertook the research upon finding no peer reviewed studies about the clitoris - #thankshelen - and revolutionised the understanding of how the clitoral anatomy sat and functioned within the body
@ItsSarahCreed So there you have it! A whistle-stop tour of the clitoris - MERRY CLITMAS!
