NEW: There's been so much footage of #GeorgeFloyd protests swirling around on social media it's been hard to separate the real from the fake.
Our team has investigated some of the most widely shared misleading posts, images and videos from the past week
bbc.co.uk/news/52934672
Undoubtedly, the mystery of videos/images of bricks near protest sites has been the biggest of them all, especially after @WhiteHouse posted a video montage on Facebook and Twitter showing piles of bricks on the streets in different cities, and protesters throwing projectiles
The posts - now deleted - accused Antifa and "professional anarchists" of domestic terror through "staging bricks and weapons to instigate violence". In many cases, the bricks were there for reasons bricks are usually on streets, construction sites! 👇
This video of "police smashing up their own car" in Boston has 3M views. The narrator says "they're going to blame it on the protesters". But there is a video of the events leading up to the car being damaged which tells a different story
This video was taken moments before and provides some context. Boston Police told a local TV station the car was already damaged when the police got there and officers were removing part of the windscreen to drive it away safely
There's this video suggesting an officer was caught looting. My colleague @O_Rob1nson investigated it. Officer was putting recovered shoes into a shop owner's car after their store was looted on 31 May. Follow her thread here 👇

This TikTok video with 5M views shows an African-American man pleading with people not to destroy his business. It was actually taken at the LA riots in 1992, following the acquittal of police officers who beat Rodney King in 1991
This super viral image of the White House in darkness, which was even shared by @HillaryClinton , is doctored. It was taken in 2014 and edited to make it look like all the lights were off. The doctored version appeared in an article on the spoof news site @newsthump in 2017
Finally, in this clip with 2M views officers seen are using a circular saw to break into a jewellery store. A man can be heard saying it makes “no sense” for officers to be breaking in. The shop has its shutters down
The store's in the Bronx, NYC. But the owner has since clarified on his Instagram account that he asked police to break in as "looters were trapped inside". “While most of the looters got away one looter got trapped inside the store, charges were pressed," he said
The owner sent me two more videos. The first appears to show the moment his store is being broken into. “The looters damaged my gate and to apprehend the culprit the police had to saw open my gate and get him,” he later posted on Instagram
We've all seen genuine videos of police brutality and violence and also some looting/rioting in the last few days. This thread is only about misleading videos and does not in any way detract the anti-racism protests currently happening in the US and the rest of the world
The piece was written by @JackAGoodman and @FloraCarmichael with verification and analysis by @O_Rob1nson @BenDoBrown @mariannaspring @EtutuJoice @alistaircoleman and me, in the BBC anti-disinformation team
