Contrast @DavidOlusoga’s principled case for the removal of the Colston statue (after attempts to relocate or contextualize were ignored) with the nonsensical Trumpian spew exiting the mouth of the Home Secretary
I think the bottom of Bristol harbor is a poetic context for Colston’s statue. So many human beings were thrown into the sea:
If I were the Bristol authorities, I’d keep the statue there, and put a camera connected to a feed in a museum, so people could come and see it underwater, as the centerpiece of an exhibition about the slave trade
Nothing got destroyed by tipping Colston into the water. Something was gained. “Nothing of him that doth fade / But doth suffer a sea-change into something rich and strange”
I imagined Colston like one of these. Apparently I'm not taking into account Bristol harbour water quality independent.co.uk/arts-entertain…
