We located and verified the camps where the sham trials took place using open source information e.g. satellite imagery, government documents including tender bids and financial plans. 
One re-education camp is a former middle school.“The compound was surrounded by high walls,it is approx 4 meters high. On the wall there was barbed wire,” one of the detainees told us. Photos and satellite imagery show the camp´s security features as the witness described.
Another re-education camp is a hospital. Experts told us it’s common for the authorities to transform public buildings into temporary re-education camps, while they finish building larger camps.
The third re-education camp was a former vocational and technical school. We verified it by using re-construction tender bids, surveillance equipment tender notices and satellite imagery. “You don’t have any freedom at all, you are being monitored 24/7,” one detainee told us.
Our investigation found evidence that high-security camps were being expanded since 2018. This was also confirmed by @shawnwzhang @Nrg8000 @BenHeubl and their great work.
"If you don't pick anything, it means you didn't confess your crime. If you don't confess, you'll stay here forever," one detainee told us.
