He’s pumping out the tweets. He’s panicking over the polls, that he might have to give some kind of national reconciliation speech on G Floyd. That would be the end of his presidency. He’d forfeit his tough guy, never apologize, own the libs, stir up division style. It’s close...
A lot of people are observing on this thread that Trump would just give his usual teleprompter monotone speech of empty platitudes with hints that there are ‘good people on both sides.’ That’s his instinct, yes. But this thing is too big now. It’s spreading to other countries; /1
senior military people are speaking out; Romney walked a march. It’s almost 2 weeks, and the crowds aren’t shrinking. The only way to calm this outcry is a real speech, with real empathy and real concessions on policing. Without that, the protestors will see right through it. /2
But such a speech would burn his base; they love Trump’s ‘f* your feelings’ style of owning the libs. Such a speech would actually have to make concessions to the libs and in an empathetic language to soothe tensions. So it’s a catch-22: he can’t stop the protests without real /3
outreach, but if he does it, his core voters will feel deeply betrayed, as they’ve gone all in on Trump & his schtick to the point of cultishness. Trump is in a real political bind, perhaps the worst of his presidency, right now. /4
