WIC: 58.6% white, 20.7% black

This characterization of the Southern strategy in the @nytimes is close, but not quite right.

Calls for "law and order" were often *part* of the Southern strategy -- but they weren't exactly one and the same.

During the Nixon era, certainly, the two blended together.

As Dov Grohsgal and I noted in @TheAtlantic, Nixon campaign strategist Kevin Phillips argued in the 1968 election that the key to realignment was "the law and order/Negro socioeconomic syndrome."

But the Republicans' Southern strategy predated that moment, and the law and order issue, too.

As I noted recently, the GOP made a move for conservative southern whites in the wake of the 1948 Dixiecrat rebellion, largely with a "states rights" framing.

Oh God, yes. From the Pee-Wee Herman Show and SNL to the Simpsons and NewsRadio, he was the absolute best.
I originally typed "Pee Wee's Playhouse," but that was the actual kids' show they did. Hartman was part of the more ... adult version they did as a stage show.

If you've never seen it, they filmed it in 1981 and broadcast it endlessly on HBO.

@myexplodedbrain A little of all that — southerners liked *some* New Deal stuff (TVA), were very tied to the old southern ID as Democrats, and distrusted GOP more on civil rights.
@myexplodedbrain But the biggest sticking point was that Southern Dems in Congress enjoyed massive perks due to (a) the Dem Party’s dominance in Congress and (b) their seniority in the Dem Party. If they officially switched, they’d lose all that, so they stayed nominal Dems and worked with GOP.
@myexplodedbrain It was common in 1940s-1960s to see congressional Dems say “oh, I’m a *Georgia* Democrat but not a *national* Democrat” and everyone knew what they meant.
