Improving the #energyefficiency of buildings is fundamentally about both today and the future. Here are 5 reasons we think building retrofit should form a key part of the #GreenRecovery:
1)It's an infrastructure project that can start now and will span decades, providing sustained employment opportunities across the UK and building a skilled, green workforce. @VividEconomics/@wwf_uk research found that 85,000 direct jobs are created to 2030 through green retrofit
2)It enables exciting new, low carbon heating options, such as heat networks that utilise waste heat from the underground or abandoned coal mines. These innovative solutions are vital to the future of heat decarbonisation and are not viable in cold and draughty buildings.
3) It supports the exciting emerging market for domestic demand-side flexibility, which is crucial to decarbonising our electricity system. Efficient buildings enable low carbon heating systems to be operated in a smart, flexible way.
4) Growing the market for energy efficiency through a #GreenRecovery will spark innovation in future business models, as trialled by @EnergySysCat's heat as a service, and the financial demonstrator projects proposed by @GFI_green. These models will be key to reaching net zero.
5) It creates the conditions for a better future, delivering better homes and workplaces, whilst ensuring that fuel poverty is eradicated along with winter deaths associated with excess cold in homes, as highlighted by @NEA_UKCharity.
