fortunasaga.com/archives/
I love the way the comics play with light and shadow. One of the things I've repeatedly discovered in the Fortuna Saga is some subtle bit of shading or a faded image just visible that adds nuance and foreshadowing
I could be wrong, but I think a lot of Part 1 is also working with the tension between being a dramatic story in a medium that's largely comedic
"You brought a potentially dangerous creature into my city and let it escape."
"Precisely."
"That was not a question."
Ah, Chief, you're funny.
Man, in three pages the green phantom goes from arguing with something in the great beyond to scaring some soldiers to contemplating the meaning of his purgatorial existence while talking to a bird. Sometimes I forget how much I like him.
A little exposition-heavy, but then we get AJ's introduction and one of Cole's many great quotes as he disappears from view between panels: "That thing smells like death. It's a bad omen. I'm not touching it anymore."
Bleu's turn to get a golden quote: "I think the rioting has stopped, but now we have to put out the fires that the people started."
No particular golden quotes here, but the Bleu/Cole and AJ/Ghost dialogues are on point here. Ghost is melodramatic, AJ is utterly unfazed by any strangeness, and Cole and Bleu's dynamic is just funny.
I think this is the first page so far that hasn't tried for any kind of comedy, and its probably the first page that really shows what Fortuna Saga is going to become. Panel lay-out, dialogue, character interactions, all on point.
"We loved each other once. Maybe someday, we'll remember why."
"Perhaps the story is not over."
A necessary digression to tell us more about AJ and let us see past her quirks to her powers and responsibilities. And another heart quote:
"Nothing her below is profane to those who know how to see. On the contrary, everything is sacred."
I went ahead and broke my rules by calling him Ghost before this, but I think this Mark's the first time Ghost is actually called Ghost?
I love Ghost's description of the other side, and am a little sad it doesn't get more play later.
Hunter got a name! I like the Hunter, though I would have liked to know a little more about him through the story.
Oh man the speech bubbles just shifted and I am so much more at ease.
Everyone's funny, but stakes are set. Something outside is sending a signal, and the main cast is on the verge of coming together. Dialogue is still solid AF
Cole and Bleu deliver quality content. No one is surprised.
1. The intro that ends with "we make our stand here" is excellent, and has some terrific foreshadowing in its panels, to boot.
2. The questions about the ocean are basically the only part of this story that 100% relies on #FinalFantasyVI
This might be the first page in Fortuna Saga I truly love
Two heart quotes here: "True evil is a tower firmly set, shaking not its top for any blast that blows."
And...
Something about this quote seems relevant now. Not sure what.
I've always liked Cole, but I feel like I'm seeing a thematic coherence in his character that I haven't noticed before? His...I don't know, seasoned optimism? Makes him a nice counterpart to almost every character he interacts with.
I just realized Bleu flinches back here in case AJ is about to strike him with lightning again.
This is a nice scene. I don't think Bleu ever puts that helmet back on.
The last five panels are pretty terrific, but my golden quote:
"That's about it. Those are my fears, inhibitions, and what I am capable of."
Just making small talk.
CREW DUST FIGHT
I like this whole sequence, but I also think it struggles with adding drama to what was mostly a comedic medium. Later fights are more balanced between comedy and drama, but this one zigzags a bit between the two
Poor Ghost. No one will let him be dramatic.
Hey, Bleu's helmet is back!
Golden quote: "Hold on, what are you doing? Is that my spine? I THINK THAT IS MY SPINE."
AJ saying "I never could get it to work" has some IMPLICATIONS
Minor spoilers: Allen is the guy who dies at the start of the movie, causing the rest of the characters to launch an investigation that leads them to the plot.
Poor Allen
"I know. I've always known." Just an excellent example of subverting brainwashing reveals.
Still a bit of the zigzagging, but in spite of some comedic moments I feel like the crew dust does bring a genuine increase in dramatic stakes and helps us see more of the characters (AJ's arrogance, Ghost's philosophy, Bleu's decency, etc.)
The juxtaposition between "plant your foot firmly" and *poke* is terrific.
Bleu loses his helmet again (I will no longer be trying to predict the status of Bleu's helmet after my embarrassing failure).
I love Bleu's speech here. It's not a golden quote/heart quote, but it really shows his core character.
I think this is where the Crew Dust fight really shines. It's a real taste of what the comic is going to become. Plus we get some foreshadowing on an upcoming major character!
Using equations as splash effects will never go out of style.
Oh no. Even in the depths of my nostalgia, #KarenStrikesAgain
But seriously: in the foreground of this episode is of my top-tier villains, and I'm going to have a lot to say about him soon.
Love the reveal of the armor in the last panel
The conversation between Ghost and the...ghost? Is actually very sweet.
"Quiet woman" is something I say to @Kaydbe a lot. That's not really relevant to this comic, but I wanted to share that to make her mad.
John makes a pretty unforgivable art mistake here. If you pay close attention, you'll notice that Balen is wearing armor when he should, in fact, be shirtless. Hard to know how that one slipped by him.
Ohhhh, Bleu lost his helmet when a mountain collapsed! Pretty good excuse, as losing things go.
I'm assuming AJ's "YEAAAA" here is an 80s style freeze-frame cheer until proven otherwise.
Heart quote: "Power rarely takes a step back - only in the face of more power."
I like to believe I would handle crashing out of the afterlife into an unknown country in the exact same way Ghost does.
Sure is nice of Ghost to change his background to something suitably ominous for his declaration.
I really like that Bleu tells an exaggerated story about killing the Crew Dust. He doesn't get a whole lot of light-hearted moments, so it's nice to see him being a little bit braggy about being a badass.
...huh. I barely remember this page, and now that I'm reading it again, I find it strangely haunting.
I love that AJ instantly understands that Cole is looking for an excuse to get rid of Rebecca. It implies that this has happened so many times before.
Golden quote: "I try not to fret over the future. It will come soon enough."
I honestly think Cole brings out the best in almost every character he interacts with. We'll see if that continues as I reread.
No matter how much it strains my eyes, I always insist on reading this transparent text. I've been doing it for nearly 15 years now.
The guide saying "Gotta Go" and clearing out the moment Karen appears has amused me from the first time I saw it.
Karen's use of time magic is the ur-example of how time magic and powers like it should be used.
Again: freezing time for a moment to have a private interlude with an old friend, and then proceeding as though nothing has happened. Karen's use of time magic is on point.
Man, I kind of forgot how much I love Karen. She absolutely refuses to take Lucian seriously.
One of the things I like about both Saga and Hymns is that the characters' actions are exactly as intelligent as the characters themselves are supposed to be. Bleu's astute analysis of things here is a good example.
Balen and Karen's cavalier attitude towards Ghost here is pretty funny, given what we're going to learn about all of them later.
Ghost is pretty funny here, but Cole and Bleu arguing about whether Ghost is a case of Revive Kills Zombie or not (while completely ignoring him) takes the cake
Ghost saying "No, let him through," is so deliciously petty and I am here for it.
Cole knew the Fire spell the entire time and waited 56 episodes to use it.
This trend already started with Ghost's spell on the crew dust, but I really love how these stories handle the implications and applications of magic. I think it really informed how I handle it in Zodiac Brave Story
Curious about the intro text here, especially given the text color. Is it foreshadowing the nature of the foe they face, or Ghost's own powers and conflicts?
Love the side eye Bleu gives Ghost here, but I love Bleu's speech combing his anger with the need for justice more.
"Few successes are not cadmean purposes." Jesus, Ghost, that is pessimistic.
I was always curious about what in AJ's training created such hostility between her and Cyri. It's not necessarily important to the story (and these allusions to unseen history add texture and depth to the characters), but I wonder.
"Why are you telling the story?"
"Because I'm obviously the most entertaining one here."
"And what do you base that on?"
"Absolutely nothing."
I mean, Cole's not wrong.
More excellent work with silhouettes. Also, I love that the river is called the Leathe.
I love the mechanics of geomancy, but I also love the underlying...I don't know, metaphysics? Philosophy? That are required to BE a geomancer.
There is so much going on here with the silhouettes and the contrasts (and I believe if you look very closely you can even see the mysterious assailant)
Dragoons have always been cool, but this dragoon is the coolest.
That said, Ghost's look of alarm is a little funny.
"We haven't fought back yet." Bleu is just so fundamentally decent.
Pretty neat move with the fire column from the ground there, Cole.
Love the Cole freak-out text when the dragoon catches his spear. Also love Cole getting the ever-loving shit literally kicked out of him, though for different reasons.
"Good thing we were here to stop him." Ghost is so deliciously bitter and sarcastic all the time.
I love the doubling effect on AJ's text to show how the words she's speaking aren't necessarily her own. It really adds to the surreal effect of this...vision? Flashback?
Really curious about how these events are going to connect to the events of Lost Noise (the fact that, according to the Fortuna Saga lore, our geomancer in Lost Noise is apparently NOT an Arlia Janet has already piqued my interest)
AJ's little "Oh, Fortuna," there is both campy as hell and really sweet.
"Stay sweet, and don't make the same mistakes I did," is a line that shows so much of AJ's grandma's personality in such a short time.
"I was commissioned. Belief has nothing to do with it." Karen is cold-blooded.
Balen seems curiously out his depth here, given his skillset.
"I work with efficiency. You just make sure you are ready when I am done." No one likes Lucian, but you can't deny that he's effective.
"I'll risk your disapproval for that peace of mind." Bleu continues to be best.
"Want to get a drink?"
"Odd....you read my mind."
Cole and Ghost are always a quality time.
"I don't think you know how you work."
"Oh yeah?"
*beat*
*beat*
*drink*
I've always really liked Lauren, and I use a quote about her to make fun of @Kaydbe all the time.
I LOVE THE VERTICAL INTERSECTING STORYLINE STRUCTURE OF THIS PAGE SO MUCH
"I suggest you go to a safe distance," and then the soldier fleeing as fast he can, tells you everything you need to about how dangerous Lucian is.
"Saddle up lieutenant colonel. We're going to war." Part One was a fun ride, but I am so excited for Part Two.
I have spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out how this marching hymn should be sung.
"Faith may have lost its meaning, but I still understand the importance of redemption. Responsibility will be taken."
This is my favorite of the soliloquies that make this whole chapter shine.
Heart quote: "Call me Ghost. I am a dead man."
"I do it so that I know everyone has the chance of living with their families instead of merely dying with them" is a great line that gets to the heart of Bleu's character, but my heart is with Ghost talking to the bird the way I do to my cat
"Hello Mr...Ghost." I like our (thus-far) unnamed geomancer apprentice being polite enough to try and be respectful to Ghost and confused enough to not know what to call him
(This account is now devoted to fan theories and stories about Dr. Allen)
Holy crap this episode's background textures hit so much harder after the hours I logged playing Ogre Battle (after watching @j_cutting's video review). Embarassing admission: I made it to the final battle and have yet to be able to beat it
"HEY JACKASSES! DID SOMEBODY ORDER A CORPS!" Cole is glorious
