1/ In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, something that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention is the role of medical examiners/coroners in investigating deaths that happen in police custody: 
2/ @jfeldman_epi has done some really important research that shows that a MAJORITY of deaths in police custody from a police-related injury were misclassified by death investigators in 2015.
3/ Some of this may be due to the subjectivity of death investigations but also: 28 states still have coroners, who are often ELECTED and DON’T have to have medical training. 30 STATES don’t require autopsy reports to be done by pathologists.
4/ Even if death investigators are licensed medical professionals, surveys have shown that 82% of pathologists have experienced pressure from outside parties to change the findings of their investigation.
