This update on the NHSX contract tracing app is fascinating. (Some reckons incoming.) bbc.co.uk/news/technolog…
I’m struck, in particular, by this sentence:

"Even so, [UK developers] still believe they are better placed to tackle the challenge than counterparts overseas who are working under constraints imposed by the two US tech firms.”

Why is that, I wonder?
There’s so much to learn from innovation contests here. Collaboration in a competitive environment would be *so useful*, but collaborating is tough when you’ve announced an intention to be “world beating”. If there was ever a time to stand on the shoulders of giants, this is it.
Also (sorry, still going), this little backstabby throwaway line is also v interesting:

"But part of their challenge is communicating this to Baroness Dido Harding - who heads up the wider Test and Trace programme - and 10 Downing Street itself.”

There is a lot happening here.
I suspect (perhaps wrongly) a bit of sexism, but there’s also some Upwards Blaming going on. Which reminded me of Crossrail. I've spent ages looking for something I’m sure @undermanager wrote about this, but can’t find it, so this will have to do instead: architectsjournal.co.uk/news/crossrail…
@undermanager Anyway, where I’m going with this is, what a weird old loop: commitment to delivering a complex and opaque strategy leads to massive complexity in delivery which leads to blaming the bosses for not understanding how complex everything is. Who would have thought it, eh?
Anyway, anyway, good to see the £800m Arpa is still on the table when this is all working so well. (Let’s hope whoever runs it is learning from eg the good work happening at opensafely.org)
