Thanks to London Kurdish Community Centre and our wonderful volunteer team we're on our way to make another delivery of food, clothes and hygiene supplies to asylum residents at Urban House Initial Accommodation Centre in Wakefield

People at Urban House have bravely protested at low quality food, being forced to share rooms (social distancing??) no PPE and lack of care for people with severe health problems. Mears management simply deny these problems exist!

Mears were given £1.15 billion public money to run asylum accommodation in Yorkshire, Scotland and northern Ireland.

Asylum residents at Urban House Initial Accommodation Centre, Wakefield strike and protest for better food.
Last week, a man with diabetes went on a 7 day hunger strike and 40 people returned inadequate food to the canteen in protest.

Alongside Urban House residents we have documented the poor quality and unsuitable food there irr.org.uk/news/like-a-pr…. Pregnant women, young children, people with serious health conditions given 'meals' like these
When people bravely protested they were told the food would improve "in a few weeks' time". But the next day the people who protested were given this for their 'main meal'. As a punishment for daring to complain.

Mears-run asylum housing is also failing its tenants, from Glasgow to Sheffield

4 weeks into national Covid19 lockdown:
* Unrelated people forced to share small rooms making social distancing/isolation impossible
* Vulnerable people (inc children) still at Urban House
* No PPE, little health info for residents
* Poor food, blocked toilets, bug infestations
‘Dora’ an Urban House resident was unwell with a cough and diarrhoea. On April 19 Mears tried to force someone unrelated to share her room - too small for social distancing. She complained and was told her request "will not be granted and if she doesn't like it she can leave"
