Damning screen grab from the video below, detailing how NYPD and @NYCDHS conduct the cruel "street sweeps" of homeless New Yorkers.

During "sweeps," people are forced out of their location and often have their belongings discarded.

Okay, back to the photo.

"Street Conditions Identified" & "CCTV/Self-initiated" likely refer to areas that the NYPD has identified for a sweep.

These are typically driven by NIMBYists, but any time someone sets up a structure, even a cardboard box, it can lead to a sweep.
"Letters to deliver" & "Letters delivered" refer to the sweep notices that the NYPD delivers to people, telling them they have to leave the area.

These sweep notices have been showing up all over the city, even during the height of the #COVID19 pandemic.

"Cleanings scheduled" and "Clean-ups completed" track the actual sweeps themselves. Here, the city had done 6 on a Monday and 8 on a Tuesday.

The volume of sweeps under @NYCMayor has increased year-over-year.

.@NYCMayor is not ashamed of this. In fact, he was bragging about it just last month.

When @NYCMayor presents "sweeps" as an opportunity to "offer help," he's being very disingenuous.

Help could have been offered without the sweep, and the help being offered is not housing.
If you want to understand if "sweeps" help, then listen to homeless New Yorkers themselves. Not @NYCMayor.

Also listen to homeless outreach workers, who wrote, "Sometimes [calling 311] leads to locations being “cleaned up,” where police and sanitation officials force individuals to move their spot, often throwing away most if not all of their belongings.

The amount of time, money, & resources @NYCMayor wastes on cruel, racist, & counterproductive policing of homeless NYers is ludicrous, especially given that people just want homes!

Housing is not only more humane, but more cost-effective.

As we continue to work to #DefundNYPD, we want to take a moment to list some of the cruel, racist, and counterproductive ways in which @NYCMayor uses the NYPD to target homeless NYers.

Let's start with the Joint Command Center. Video below.

Last November, @NYCMayor rolled out a plan called "The "Journey Home." Through this plan, he created the Joint Command Center. He also tripled the size of NYPD’s Homeless Outreach Unit, investing $9.5 million per year for 79 new staff and $1.1 million for vehicles and equipment.
The Joint Command Center and the Homeless Outreach Unit have led to an increase in cruel street sweeps, which @CDCgov explicitly advises against. Story by @akashvmehta @Gothamist.

Update: It’s very cold. Police will begin removing people in 25 minutes, if not sooner. There are no warming busses. Only NYPD and CitiCare vans to transport people who “agree” to go to shelters, almost all of which are dorm-style or congregate settings.
Three homeless NYers outside tried to go down to the station before 1AM, and were forced out. We provided socks but they were suspicious as to whether we played in any role in their removal. A sign of the challenges outreach teams will face more than ever moving forward.
A man who just woken up comes upstairs and asks “Where am I?”

He asks for the bus to the shelter, which is sitting outside, but no sign of outreach to let him in.

We run down to ask NYPD where they are. They don’t know.

By the time we came back up, the man had left.

Tonight, we spent hours outside the 30th Street Men's Shelter, where the majority of people who "agree" to come to shelter from the subways are being transported.

This is Rick. Like countless others we spoke to, he left within minutes, and understandably so.

30th Street is arguably the most dangerous shelter the city could be bringing people to directly from the subways. It's the city's largest shelter and bedrooms are dorm-style.

It's no wonder so many people refused to go inside or left within an hour.

Over the course of two hours, we saw *dozens* of vans transporting multiple people from the subways where NYPD removed them.

They were dropped outside 30th Street.

It's very likely @NYCMayor counts all those dropped off as "placed in shelters" regardless of whether they stayed.
