@PierrePoilievre @AlexpiersonAMP Now, I am going to talk about how poor, and lazy engineering is running our infrastructure projects into the ground. We have put eng firms on a pedestal, when in fact, poor engineering is destroying the industry, and costing taxpayer $$$$
Just sent to me - an email thread once again detailing how P. Eng's do not understand the process they are supposed oversee on behalf of clients, and have become lazy in how they carry out their jobs. We are going to discuss Issued for Construction drawings - and its importance.
For some reason, eng firms have put profit over client liability and the public safety. And, this translates into the world of infrastructure, and a project being derailed in a big way. Prior to about 7 years ago - every major contract had 2 parts - Tender drawings, and IFC dwg
During the tender process, addendums and clarifications are made. During contract award, more details can end up being changed, and modified. This is where an engineer is supposed to review, and then send out IFC drawings. These revised dwgs are critical to suppliers, builders.
As builds become more complex with electrical and mechanical systems, the IFC drawings allow suppliers, manufacturers to provide equipment that meets the performance specs, and operates with the correct electrical supply. But eng firms are dropping the IFC!!!! Why???????
Recently - MB Hydro had to actually issue a memo that says they will no longer issue permits or requests for service if there are no Issued for Construction dwgs. Why would they have to tell eng firms this? It is what they are actually getting paid for.
The problem? On major projects, like Water treatment plants, lagoons, lift stations - the complex pumps, and mechanical systems were not designed to match up with the electrical supply. Wrong voltages, single phase instead of 3 phase. These are critical. Get something wrong....
These design engineering mistakes, and sheer laziness - they cost clients - like FN's money, time, and they create a battleground between the contractor and the First Nation. The GC gets blamed for delay, the subs take the hit, and the engineer gets paid a fortune to "solve it".
But what are they solving? Nothing. They are getting paid to fix their own mistake. They aren't even doing what they were paid to. These prissy fuckers are the exact reason why First Nations do not have clean water and sewer. People keep asking how we solve the problem?
If the people hired to design, review and manage actually did their job effectively - First Nations would have clean water, sewage treatment systems that actually work - and yes - I am calling out every major Eng Firm in Canada because its the truth. .
