Forts, Palaces & Mahals have had a great and wide effect on the culture and history of Indian society and its people.
Behest of the conditions, there was a certainty of rulers spending huge amounts of money on their palaces and forts in the medival India.
Such was a man named, Kumbhkarna, also called Rana Kumbha of Sisodia Dynasty of Mewar in Rajasthan. He is said to have built 32 out of 84 forts in the period of Sisodias.
To our dismay, we are least taught and told about the accomplishments and the valour of these people. reason may be anything but this does not decrease the esteem and proud they have brough to the land. Rana Kumbha gave the country a site which is lesser known, but a “WONDER”.
‘KUMBALGARH FORT’
This is called the Great Wall of India, constructed by Rana Kumbha in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan.
UNESCO’s world heritage site, it has 36 km length of wall upto a height of 3600 ft.
This is said to have been built by Rana Kumbha for his wife, yet we are not told and taught that this is too a symbol of love.
Took 15 odd years for it to complete and saw many invasions and eyes of captivity, although being 1100 m above MSL.
The wall that runs along the perimeter of the fort is world’s second largest wall after ‘The Great wall of china’. The wall continuously stretches to 36 Kms in length and is 15 feet wide, Two cars, 3 cavelry, 7 horse riders can walk together in one lane at a time on this path.
The Fort is indeed an architectural wonder which gives a testimony of the architects of that era built under the supervision of famous architect of that era ‘Mandan’. There are 7 huge gates of entrance in the fort.
The place holds an astonishing 360 temples out of which 300 are jain temples securitised by the great long walls due to the fact that the place was earlier ruled by a Jain prince Samprati of the second century B.C.
The fort to our surprise being this huge was invincible for a long time untill discovered by four kings jointly namely Mughal king Akbar, Amer’s Man Singh, Mewar’s Udai Singh, and Sultan of Gujrat.
Kumbhalgarh fort also holds the honour of being the birthplace of the brave Maharana Pratap, the great warrior of Mewar who did not go down to the giant Mughals at the time.
He later complted a fort called Taragarh in Ajmer, named after his wife TARA.
