Many people in Pakistan believe that Raja Porus who fought the Battle of Hydaspes (326 BCE) against Alexander of Macedon was a Hindu. Raja Porus was not a Hindu but a Buddhist and this has been confirmed by many well known Numismatic scholars.
Indian religious scripture Satapatha Brahmana (500BC) calls Puru tribe Rakshasas & Asuras (Demons). Also used for Buddhists. Hindus say Porus (fought Alexander of Macedon) was a Puru & thus Hindu. Can Asura or Rakshasas be Hindus. Porus was Buddhist. Numismatics confirm this fact
As stated in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Volume 6, the coins of Porus' era prove unmistakably that he was a Buddhist and not a Hindu as is famously believed.
Many stop at Bhera on the Motorway, not knowing that classic battle between Alexander and Porus was fought nearby. Firdowsi's romantic allure about this battle is exquisitely captivating. He identifies Porus as Fur. Unfortunately however his ode ends with Alexander killing Porus.
2000 years ago in Pakistan, Raja Porus' chariots were as feared as archers carried by chariots. 4-6 horses abreast pulling chariot, their hair braided into tufts rising between ears & reins sweep back to hands of charioteer. 8 spoke, spiked wheels, restricted enemy coming closer.
There are different versions. Pseudo Callisthenes states Alexander killed Porus. 11th century Shahnama e Firdousi also states that Alexander killed Porus. Arrian & some others state that Alexander won. Some historians state that it was a drawn battle. Others state Porus won.
Shahnama e Firdowsi is a 50,000 long couplet epic poem written by famous Persian poet Firdowsi between 997-1010 AD. Firdowsi explains Alexander's encounter with Raja Porus in Battle of Hydaspes, fought near Bhera, Punjab, Pakistan. In the book, Firdowsi calls Raja Porus, Fur.
Plutarch in "Life of Alexander" says; Porus' elephant defended the king and courageously repulsed enemy assailants during entire battle of Hydaspes. When King was wounded with arrows, kneeled down and softly lowered Porus with his trunk and gently drew every arrow from his body.
In the Battle of Hydaspes in 326 BC, Pakistan, it were the horse mounted Assyrian archers of Alexander's army who also played a major role in countering Porus' elephants and his heavy chariots that got stuck in the mud slush due to heavy rain.
Greek historian Arrian mentions two kind of swords used by Porus' forces. He indicated that the soldiers carried short & broad swords.
Greek historian Arrian said that arrows used in 326 BC by ancient Pakistani archers against the forces of Alexander, “are little less than 3 cubit long (approx 4.5 ft), and fly with such force that neither shield nor breast plate or any armour is strong enough to withstand them.”
In 1957, while addressing cadets of Indian Military Academy, Russian General Georgy Zhukov stated, Alexander’s actions after Battle of Hydaspes (Pakistan) suggest he suffered an outright defeat. In Zhukov’s view, Alexander had suffered a greater setback than Napoleon in Russia.
Sources of Republic of India record that Porus was killed by mistake by Magadhan chief adviser Rakshasa who was trying to assassinate Chandragupta Maurya instead. Greek historian Diodorus sates that Porus was killed by Thracian general Eudemus, in charge of the Macedonian armies.
