Folks are trying to rationalize the #AtlantaShooting of #RayshardBrooks bc he resisted arrest. Putting aside whether they should have been called to begin with (he was tapped out in a Wendy's line), it is worth remembering that resisting arrest is not a capital offense. Also...
2/ The fact that these two officers could not subdue Brooks when he first resisted, without a weapon, suggests they shouldn't be cops. And once he gets away w/the taser, threatening no one with it, chasing/shooting him is criminal. They had his Lic #. Could have found him...
3/ Fact is, police CAN go without shooting people in these cases, but in this case and so many others they choose to kill. Oddly, when white folks are beating their ass/resisting, they seem to manage to hold fire...Here are a few examples...
4/ This is from Phoenix in 2014. Granted the guy died, bc they stunned him so many times and he went into cardiac arrest. But even w/this resistance they NEVER tried to kill him with bullets. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2…...
5/ And here's one from CA...guy gets tased, then chases after the cop who runs away...then the guy gets in a car and rams the police cruiser, still not shot...

So, using Brooks's "resistance" as justification for killing him in this case just doesn't wash

For those white folks in particular who get nervous at the idea of de-policing, and putting aside the mechanics of how we go from point a, to point b, I'd like for you to consider a few things.
2/ If you are scared by the thought of far fewer police, drastically reduced law enforcement budgets, and perhaps the eventual abolition of "policing" as we know it (in favor of other mechanisms for ensuring public safety), have you asked why that is?
3/ Especially considering the relatively low arrest rates in most of the places where you live (which signal that you/we aren't having to turn to cops for "protection" all that regularly anyway)?

1/ Those who defend the honor of confederate soldiers say that regardless of the cause for which they were sent to war (slavery and white supremacy according to their leaders), we should memorialize them bc after all, "they were Americans too." Here's why that's bullshit...
2/ Notice, we do NOT memorialize the 20k black folks who fought for England during the revolution (bc the crown was offering them freedom from bondage if the loyalists won). They were 'Americans' (not citizens by law but ya know what I mean) and outnumbered black 'patriots' 5:1..
3/ But we don't even learn about them, let alone build them statues the same way, and this, despite the fact that they were fighting for their freedom. The CSA solider fought for black bondage. The black loyalist fought for black liberty. Notice which one we prefer to honor.

1/ Putting aside that most violence at the protests has been done by whites (& cops really), white folks have always been more bothered by violence in response to racism than the violence OF racism. A thought experiment can prove the point. It's a question I've asked many times..
2/ Ask yourself, white folks, what's your initial reaction when I say the following entirely inarguable thing:

Black folks held in bondage under enslavement had the ABSOLUTE moral right to kill their 'masters' in their sleep to get free.
3/ Does that bother you even a little? Do you hesitate even a second to agree? Or perhaps even disagree? Ok, now try it this way:

The women held by Ariel Castro for years had the absolute moral right to kill him in his sleep to get free. So too Elizabeth Smart with her captors..
