People keep saying “if you mean reform, say reform. But ‘defund’ is confusing.”

But “reform” has dozens of meanings, so the term is as easily co-opted as it is misunderstood.

Defund has a clear meaning. The only ambiguity is amount of money folks want to take away.
The other useful thing abt “defund” is that any “explanation” invites a conversation abt what we should affirmatively “re-fund” with that money, which triggers a conversation about “big structural/intersectional” solutions beyond woke sloganeering. We’re talking material change.
Becuase it’s a structural solution that gets to root causes, the “defund/refund” framing even addresses the “black on black crime” specter: Funding education, housing, social services etc will lower violence all around.
